CEClang.93 TITLE: "LIFE AFTER THE FACT..." AUTHOR: Sara A. Reinke, Youth Services Center; St. Anthony, Idaho GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for grades 9-12 OVERVIEW: This activity is intended to be a culminating activity for an interdisciplinary unit in government/literature, using as the text the novel Lord of the Flies. PURPOSE: Students will have an opportunity to explore implications of the role of the individual in society-- decisions/actions within a community. OBJECTIVES: Students will create an Oprah/Donahue type interview before a live studio audience--thus involving the whole class in role-playing. Their subject will be the after-math of the rescue of the surviving boys from the island. RESOURCES/MATERIALS NEEDED: Classroom set of novels (for prior work), video camera equipment, a television/VCR. Also a student-prepared videotape of in interview with Ralph-- describing his ordeal. ACTIVITIES/PROCEDURES: ROLES Interviewer-- will set the realistic tone, and ask questions which have been carefully prepared to explore individual responsibility and decision-making. All will relate to the island experience, and to the return now to the "outer world". Guests-- the naval captain rescuer (describing what he saw, thought at the time of the rescue.) a child psychologist (speculating about the trauma, personal responses of rationalization, denial, and long-range effects of the experience on the survivors.) a juvenile justice expert (describing the possiblity of legal action regarding the deaths of Piggy and Simon. Who was responsible, what is appropriate accountability?) a former teacher from the boys' school (describing pre-island days personalities of Ralph, Jack, Piggy) Video crew-- usually there are some who prefer technical, hands-on roles to anything which involves role-playing. Live audience-- the class, anyone wishing to participate can ask questions. (Obviously some of these should be pre- planned, but the group may come up with some of their best questions spontaneously.)
